It doesn’t have to be so hard. We are not distant, blank faced analysts, but instead are responsive and collaborative in our approach. Together, we will untangle the knots created by anxiety, depression, trauma, family, eating, and relationship problems that leave you feeling disconnected from yourself, your body, and your emotions.

Hi and welcome! I'm so glad you are here. I approach therapy like a conversation: collaborative, with warmth, humor and honesty. I use an integrative approach that is unique to you and your needs. Together, we’ll identify the strengths already within you, explore how you relate to yourself and others, and gently challenge what no longer works for you anymore. Prior to becoming a therapist, I spent a decade working in international and US-based nonprofits, living abroad for a number of those years and engaging with people and cultures from all over the world. I also have worked within higher education in residential life and student life roles. All of these experiences were their own sort of education, helping me learn how to navigate the changes, surprises, and complexities of life. It would be my honor to sit with you as you navigate your own story.

When therapy becomes a reality A situation arises in one’s life that alters our once innocent perspective of our surroundings. Answers are searched through the experience of others when ultimately the truth lies within our own experiences. These two phrases tend to resonate with individuals who experience trauma, anxiety, depression, overall dysregulation within their environment. Each person’s experience is unique as well as the journey to repairing the damage left behind. I believe therapy can be used to create a personable, yet the potentially uncomfortable path to reality and self-truth. Without exposing or facing the wounds, the trauma response can remain to stagnate or continue to spread internally and externally. In which developing the vicious cycle of chaos within, generationally, and/or onto others our surroundings. Therefore, strengthening self-acceptance in exploring our wounds can create wisdom for breaking the cycle(s). Professional Experience Seeking a therapist that fits you can be daunting. I feel in order to fully engage in the therapeutic process, it is important to know who your story is being shared with. I have experience with various populations and my style tends to be direct in nature. The individuals I have had the pleasure of meeting tend to struggle(d) in the following areas: Relationships (family, romantic, & interpersonal) Substance abuse (self or family/loved one) Life transitions (grief, growth, roles, separations, etc.) Intellectual-Developmental disabilities & Autism Caregiver fatigue “Never give up on someone with mental illness. When “I” is replaced with “WE”, Illness becomes Wellness”-Shannon L. Alder

A lot of college students feel like they should have everything figured out by now. The truth is, most people don’t. College can bring a lot of pressure, academically, socially, and personally. You might be feeling overwhelmed, stuck, lonely, or navigating relationship challenges, or questioning your direction about what comes next. Many students I work with come to therapy because something in their life doesn’t feel quite right. Sometimes that means exploring stress happening right now, and other times it means getting curious about past experiences or childhood dynamics that may still be shaping patterns in relationships, self-confidence, or the way you handle difficult emotions. My approach is warm, collaborative, and grounded in helping you better understand yourself while also building practical tools to manage stress and feel steadier. Therapy with me doesn’t have to feel stiff or overly clinical; humor, swearing, and showing up as your real self are all welcome here. My office is located by a GVSU Laker Line bus stop and is about a 10-minute walk. You don’t have to sort everything out on your own. Reach out if you're ready to start getting the support you need!

Living a “life worth living” can seem like a path only others get to travel, while our journey feels unfair, exceedingly difficult, or at times impossible. At times we discover that our struggles are the result of the choices we made, or the choices others have made that affect us. At other times, we unknowingly hold onto faulty beliefs about ourselves or others, living as if they are true or accurate. To cope, we develop strategies to make the journey seem more doable. They can indeed be helpful and carry us toward our goals, or be the very obstacle that prevents us from achieving our potential. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Certified Diplomate with the NASW in Clinical Social Work. I have worked with children, teens, young adults, and adults, as a practitioner of DBT,and CBT, supportive therapies, and multiple trauma modalities such as Prolonged Exposure, Traumatic Incident Reduction, TF-CBT, and Cognitive Processing Therapy. If you find that this description of “living” resonates for you, therapy may provide the hurdle help you need to claim or reclaim your agency. Goodness of fit is a crucial variable in therapy. There are many therapists in our community who may be that link for you. If after reading my profile, we may seem like a good fit, give me a call.

You might be a good fit for working with me I if you’re feeling overwhelmed, stressed, anxious, or carrying around stuff from your past that still shows up in your day-to-day life. Maybe you’ve been through hard or confusing experiences and aren’t sure how to talk about them yet. Therapy with me isn’t “one-size-fits-all” — we go at your pace and figure out what actually works for you. I focus on helping students feel safer in their bodies, understand their emotions, and build real coping skills they can use outside of sessions. I also love incorporating animals into therapy when appropriate, because they can help make the process feel more comfortable, grounding, and a little less intimidating. If you’re looking for a supportive, down-to-earth space where you can be yourself, you’re in the right place.

When one feels that they are more in control, they have more confidence in themselves. When one feels out of control and overwhelmed, they are lacking in confidence and often get frustrated. Thankfully there is a way to be a control freak without doing it to others. Control yourself by paying more attention to your emotions, thoughts, and actions. I want to help you do that so you can find more enjoyment out of the things you want to do and less stress doing the things you don't want to do. Let me help you create confidence in yourself to manage better and take control of your life. Some of the most common things I help you gain more control over is stress, anxiety, depression, eating disorders / dysfunctions, emotional management, and relationships.
