Therapists for college students near New York, NY
Our therapists are specially trained to address the roots of trauma and provide the tools to approach everyday life with a positive attitude and a peaceful mindset. Everyone’s healing journey is different, and we pride ourselves on an approach that includes cultural sensitivity to individual situations. Therapy can be hard, we understand. This is why our goal is to make it fun, relatable, and something you want to keep doing. Using a relaxed conversational approach, we help our clients get to the root of their struggles and find true healing.
At McGarril Mental Health Counseling, we believe that therapy works best when it's honest, well-informed, and deeply human. We founded this practice because we saw too many people struggling to find therapists who were both clinically excellent and genuinely present. Too often, mental health care feels either coldly clinical or lacks the evidence-based foundation that creates lasting change. We work with clients 18 and over, dealing with depression, anxiety, substance use, relationship issues, grief, eating disorders, and much more. We use EMDR, DBT, IFS, ACT, and CBT approaches. We're committed to offering something different: relational and trauma-informed therapy that combines rigorous training with authentic connection. We show up fully—bringing our expertise, our continued learning, and our humanity to every session.
Do you hide your feelings from yourself and others, even without intending to? Maybe certain emotions were discouraged or disallowed during your childhood. Maybe you have endured traumatic experiences that make some feelings seem dangerous. Maybe you have been impacted by systemic inequality or prejudice as a result of your identity. For these reasons and others, you may avoid noticing and expressing sadness, loneliness, or anger. Instead, you try to keep yourself busy, mask your pain with jokes and laughter, or rationalize that “it’s not so bad” or “others have it worse.” Rejecting these parts of yourself comes at a very steep cost. Efforts to defend against your feelings can result in depression, anxiety, emptiness, and many other symptoms. Most importantly, remaining hidden compromises relationships. After all, it is hard to connect meaningfully with others when you are disconnected from yourself. Slowing down to make contact with your true feelings is worth the effort. In therapy, we will work together to observe and name the ways in which you have been ignoring your inner experience. As you become aware of your defenses, you will learn to deploy them flexibly rather than automatically. You will grow to tolerate and maybe even appreciate the feelings that used to feel frightening or shameful. With time, you can come to understand yourself better and feel a sense of ease being you.

Welcome. If you’re here, I imagine you may be feeling stuck or uncertain about how to move forward in your life. I would like to help you take the next steps. In our work together, we will find ways for you to more meaningfully connect with yourself and with those who are important to you. This work may include facing something from your past, gaining new awareness of repetitive cycles of behavior, navigating a difficult life transition, or the opportunity to freely discover and playfully explore your own subjectivity and imagination. I also work with couples to improve their communication by identifying the ways in which they get stuck trying to resolve conflict, while also finding ways to achieve greater emotional intimacy. My areas of focus include: depression (particularly with men), anxiety, life transitions, identity development, artistic stress, bereavement, trauma, and interpersonal difficulties. My approach is collaborative, active, warm, and transparent. Having worked as an actor previously, I am also particularly aware of the impact of the body on our wellbeing, the nuances of the creative process, and of the various (and often contradictory) roles we play in our relationships. Integrating this perspective in my practice has benefited my work with creatives and non-creatives alike. My practice is primarily psychodynamic; I begin with the assumption that people develop certain patterns of interacting with others in childhood, and that these patterns are repeated throughout life. I use the therapeutic relationship in order to help clarify these conscious and unconscious patterns of relating. If you think we may be a good fit together, please reach out to schedule a free phone consultation. I can be reached at dralexseife@gmail.com
Welcome! I work with adolescents and young adults with trauma, anxiety and depression. Many are struggling to navigate family relationships during life transitions or identity shifts. As a writer, I enjoy working with artists as they navigate creative blocks. I practice from a psychodynamic approach, drawing heavily on attachment theory and relational strengths. I have extensive experience working with college-aged students and young adults. I welcome you to reach out for a phone call to discuss your needs, and whether we might work together.
Is it just me, or do a lot of these "bios" start to sound the same after a while? Finding a therapist online is difficult, which I know from personal experience. I am here to provide connections, help facilitate joy and offer a space for you to learn to express your needs and be supported. Our practice together will value your lived experiences as the primary material and will be co-created through empathy and open communication. These systems of mental health are not ones that want us to "feel better", thanks to capitalism and systemic racism. I want to offer a space to fight against that. I have experience working with "high-risk" (read, traumatized and hurt) people living with mental illnesses and difficult experiences. I am comfortable working with what is often labeled as the more "severe" diagnoses and I focus of finding the health in every individual. I am a New York State licensed creative arts therapist and a board certified dance/movement therapist. This helps me in finding creative and expressive ways to connect in therapy spaces for all different types of people. I believe we can all benefit from some extra support lately! You deserve to live a life with more joy, ease and confidence. Therapy doesn't have to be a one-sided relationship where you're mulling over your entire life's history and all of the pain! In fact, it can be an enjoyable process; a full, engaging relationship with humor, intellect, creativity, spark and curiosity. I'm a real person in the room with you. Together, we will explore solutions and new ways of thinking, feeling and acting. You and I can experiment in sessions to tap into resources or to find new tools to unburden you from emotional pain, whether that be with mindfulness, cognitive, somatic or creative techniques. With 15+ years of experience, many clients have reported positive changes from our work, including less anxiety, more awareness and clarity and healthier relationships. I also specialize working with ACoAs & Codependency. My first job in the field was working at a college counseling center so I'm also very familiar with working with the 18+ crowd and all of the hassles that can come with college living, relationships and school.
Hi! If you’re seeking out therapy, then it’s likely you’re a little nervous. If so, take a deep breath! I’m here to create a space where you feel safe and supported as you share your personal story. In therapy we will focus on practical skills for addressing your symptoms and explore how your story of self has been shaped by both current and past relationships. I enjoy working with emerging adults, adolescents, and anyone eager to build a “life worth living.” I believe that in healing there is room for humor. And that my authenticity allows us to do great work together. When I’m not working I love going to the dog park and watching reality tv. I view the therapeutic relationship as similar to canoeing - it requires you to provide the steering, while I supply the momentum, and motivation and commitment from both of us to get to the destination. In our work together, I believe in giving you space to explore your story, as it was, as it is, as you want it to be, in a safe, supportive, empowering way that will, in time, allow you to feel confident and secure within your mind, body, and relationships. Within my practice, I utilize eco-therapy as a means to build an objective, curious, and comfortable relationship with the physical world around us, in order to practice building that same relationship within ourselves and with the people around us. It can feel so easy to get swept up in judgemental, shame-based thoughts, creating false perceptions, emotional pain and isolation. And yet, in the same way we prepare for cold winter nights or sweltering summer heat, so too can we weather the storms of our social and emotional worlds. To orient our work towards achieving your therapeutic goals, I work with Internal Family Systems, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, existential therapy, somatic therapy, animal therapy, ecotherapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, CBT and mindfulness practices. Utilizing this interdisciplinary blend we can identify and work through the obstacles to then find ways to move forward and love yourself into creating your ideal reality. I accept individuals, couples and families of all genders, identities, religions, and backgrounds. With a client-centered approach I believe you are the greatest expert of your own life, and in order to effectively row this canoe I ask for trust, honesty, commitment, curiosity, and engagement, so I, in return, will provide compassion, patience, knowledge, and reflection.
