I work with college students who feel stressed, overextended, or unsure of their direction. Many are balancing school, relationships, family expectations, and mental health at the same time. Living a “life worth living” can seem like a path only others get to travel, while our journey feels unfair, exceedingly difficult, or at times impossible. At times we discover that our struggles are the result of the choices we made, or the choices others have made that affect us. At other times, we unknowingly hold onto faulty beliefs about ourselves or others, living as if they are true or accurate. To cope, we develop strategies to make the journey seem more doable. They can indeed be helpful and carry us toward our goals, or be the very obstacle that prevents us from achieving our potential. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Certified Diplomate with the NASW in Clinical Social Work. I have worked with children, teens, young adults, and adults, as a practitioner of DBT,and CBT, supportive therapies, and multiple trauma modalities such as Prolonged Exposure, Traumatic Incident Reduction, TF-CBT, and Cognitive Processing Therapy. If you find that this description of “living” resonates for you, therapy may provide the hurdle help you need to claim or reclaim your agency. Goodness of fit is a crucial variable in therapy. There are many therapists in our community who may be that link for you. If after reading my profile, we may seem like a good fit, give me a call.
Are you struggling with adjustment and life changes? Do you feel frustrated or alone? I have worked with many students to work on many different areas of concern. I am here to say "I hear you" and I would love the opportunity to help you begin your journey to a stronger you!
I am licensed clinical social worker in Michigan with 8 years of professional work experience. I have experience in helping clients with stress and anxiety, parenting issues, & depression. I also have experience working with coping with life changes. Working with teens and young adults is an area in which I specialize and enjoy greatly. I also specialize in multicultural issues, especially within the Latinx community. I work with my clients to create an open and safe environment where thoughts and feelings can be shared without fear of judgment. Taking the first step to sign up for therapy can take courage and I am proud of you for getting started - I am excited to start working with you! I offer evening and weekend sessions. I work with clients to find accommodating times for us both, therefore you may not see "availability" within my calendar as I tailor this experience to fit your needs and schedule!
Do you find it challenging to relax and enjoy the present moment, especially in difficult times filled with fear and uncertainty? Are you struggling to quiet your inner critic? Do you have a hard time sitting with intense emotions, naming them, and expressing them to others? I work with female and queer clients who want to feel more grounded, present, and empowered in their lives. Things such as trauma, substance use, anxiety, and depression can impact our ability to connect with our bodies, feel our feelings, and experience safety in the present moment. In addition to talk therapy, I offer somatic therapy: Brainspotting (which is similar to EMDR) and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy. Somatic therapy uses a bottom-up approach of feeling vs. thinking. The body contains so much intuitive wisdom, and being able to sit with challenging sensations – in a safe and controlled way – can lead to better emotion regulation. Therapy can be challenging, so I strive to provide a light-hearted, non-judgmental space where humor and laughter become a part of the process. If I could be a good fit for you, email me to schedule a free consultation, or to schedule an initial session.

My name is Carolyn Roath. I am a Biblically informed Christian therapist, Master of Clinical Social Work, and owner of my own private telehealth practice. I hold a master’s degree in Clinical Social Work from Michigan State University. My heart for those grieving relational loss and trauma has led me to this work. As a follower of Christ, I seek to create a safe and nurturing environment where the client knows they are free from judgment. It is paramount for me that I hold the vulnerable, tender, and painful parts of my client’s being with dignity and respect. Being trusted by a client is an honor I take very seriously. In my work I strive to empower my clients to be self-led, while gently guiding them with questions to prompt self-reflection. I resonate strongly with attachment theory, Internal Family Systems, and Interpersonal Neurobiology utilizing a strength-based approach. I perceive my role as continually validating clients while helping them process, synthesize, and analyze information through active listening.
Whether this is your first time in counseling or you are looking to build on previous work, finding a therapist that is the right fit is vital. I am passionate about supporting clients by creating a safe, empathetic, judgment-free and welcoming space for them to process difficult experiences, manage life transitions and gain insight. While I have been a counselor for about 3 years, I have been working with trauma survivors and building on that knowledge for almost 9 years. My foundation as a therapist was built on advocacy work for survivors of sexual assault, intimate partner violence, sexual harassment and stalking. Additionally, I have worked on several college campuses with students as they manage life transitions and stressors that come with this. Lastly, I love working with young adults in processing identity concerns, grief and loss, anxiety, depression and more. As a therapist I want to acknowledge the intersection of identities and life experiences that impact one’s identity. With this, I strive to be person-centered working collaboratively with the client to set their own mental health goals. Due to my knowledge and interest in trauma work I received training in EMDR and use that as a modality frequently. I hope to see you in therapy and look forward to hearing how I can support you in navigating life stressors and overall improving your mental health and wellbeing.

College was a tricky time for me. It was a time of loss, big decisions, and anxiety. I really needed all the support I could get. I remember it well and was really close to quitting. Fast forward many years, as I've learned some incredibly useful therapy skills as an adult, I hope to pass these skills on to those that are in search of them. We are all imperfect humans and we can all benefit from the skills of self-compassion and therapy, even if it is simply to understand ourselves better then make life decisions based on that new information. If you're interested in creative ways to approach therapy, particularly with art therapy and mindfulness-based approaches, I'd love to work with you. I work through a platform called Headway to help you use your insurance (more insurance options to come in the near future).
Hi and welcome! I'm so glad you are here. I approach therapy like a conversation: collaborative, with warmth, humor and honesty. I use an integrative approach that is unique to you and your needs. Together, we’ll identify the strengths already within you, explore how you relate to yourself and others, and gently challenge what no longer works for you anymore. Prior to becoming a therapist, I spent a decade working in international and US-based nonprofits, living abroad for a number of those years and engaging with people and cultures from all over the world. I also have worked within higher education in residential life and student life roles. All of these experiences were their own sort of education, helping me learn how to navigate the changes, surprises, and complexities of life. It would be my honor to sit with you as you navigate your own story.
