I am a therapist with over 30 years of experience working with teens and adults at all stages in life. My professional goal is to develop the highest quality relationship with each client, while using a variety of specific techniques that are tailored to each person's needs. I provide a safe, non-judgmental environment for you to be able to talk about difficult feelings and experiences, and come up with effective coping skills. Clients who come seeking help from me generally feel stuck in some area of their lives. They often feel depressed and anxious. They may be struggling at school, having problems in relationships, and may be trying to discover their place in the world. Through insight, thoughtful exploration, and a collaborative effort to identify and change problematic behaviors, my clients find relief from their symptoms, grow beyond the limitations they have felt restricted by, and experience a stronger sense of self in the world.

Each of us has the potential to connect with and live from a creative, energized and compassionate center. Once established, we can perpetually draw upon this connection to understand and accept our past, to guide our present, and to embrace our future. With warmth, commitment and respect, and with attention to body, mind, and spirit, I work to help people access the inner resources they need to live with happiness, safety and ease. As a therapist, I meet people where they are. I collaborate with them to create a treatment that is flexible and responsive to their needs and experience, and help guide them toward their stated goals.

Starting therapy is a big step—one that takes courage. College can be exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming. Maybe you're struggling with the weight of past experiences, feeling lost about your future, or dealing with relationship challenges that leave you unsure of where you stand. Balancing all of this while trying to keep up with school and daily life can feel like too much to handle on your own. You don’t have to figure it all out alone. Therapy is a space where you can bring your full self—your worries, frustrations, hopes, and uncertainties—without fear of judgment. My goal is to help you make sense of what feels messy, reconnect with your strengths, and navigate the challenges that are holding you back. I specialize in working with college students and understand the unique struggles that come with this stage of life. If you're curious about how therapy might help, I offer a free 15-minute phone consultation. Feel free to check out my website or send me an email with any questions. No matter what you're facing, you're not alone, and I'm here to support you.

Welcome to Meridian Psychotherapy Associates, where we support the unique needs of college students. We understand that the college experience can be an exciting yet challenging time, filled with academic pressures, personal growth, and various transitions. Our goal is to provide a specialized and nurturing environment where college students can find solace, understanding, and guidance as they navigate this critical phase of their lives. Our approach to individual therapy is anchored in a deep understanding of the issues they commonly encounter. We address a wide range of concerns, including stress management, anxiety, depression, academic pressures, time management, relationship challenges, identity exploration, and more. Our Trauma informed therapists are skilled in helping college students cope with the complexities of their academic, social, and emotional worlds. For college students in committed relationships, we offer couple therapy to support them in fostering healthy communication, resolving conflicts, and strengthening their bonds. We recognize that maintaining a healthy relationship while attending college can be demanding, and our couple therapy sessions are tailored to address the unique challenges couples may face during this phase of life. We also offer adult family therapy, recognizing that family dynamics can play a significant role in a college student's well-being. Our family therapy sessions provide a safe space to explore and resolve familial conflicts, improve communication with parents and siblings, and foster a supportive environment for personal growth and development. To enhance accessibility and flexibility, we offer both in-office and telehealth services. We understand that college schedules can be demanding and unpredictable, so our telehealth option allows students to receive therapy conveniently from their dorms, apartments, or any private space. At Meridian Psychotherapy, we prioritize the mental health and well-being of college students. Our licensed therapists are not only skilled clinicians but also empathetic allies who genuinely care about the success and happiness of our student clients. We recognize the importance of providing a confidential and non-judgmental space for students to share their concerns and explore their thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment. Our commitment goes beyond therapy sessions, as we strive to empower college students with coping skills and resources they can carry forward throughout their academic journey and beyond. We work collaboratively with students, empowering them to overcome challenges, develop resilience, and build a strong foundation for their future. If you are a college student seeking support and growth during this transformative time, we encourage you to take the first step towards better mental health. Reach out to us for a consultation, and let us be a part of your journey towards personal and academic success. As individuals or in the context of a relationship, we are always trying to make meaning of our lives, decide what is essential to us, and think about the path we are on. Of course, in life there are transitions and challenges along the way which interfere. One can become affected emotionally and can get lost for a time, or feel disillusioned, upset or stuck. In our relationships, we experience conflict and communication struggles, and sometimes get locked into repeated and unwanted patterns. One might ask: "Am I living the life I want; is there something more for me? How do I change? Therapy can be a way to understand the emotions we have, the life transitions we experience and the thoughts we linger on as our lives and relationships evolve and develop. Beyond understanding, therapy’s intent is to support and prompt change and to help you sort through these challenges in your own unique way. Collaboration will guide our work together. I am an interactive, direct and reflective therapist who brings curiosity, humor and respect for the complexity of the issues individuals face. Change is difficult to achieve; my job is to help you utilize and build your resources to accomplish the goals you seek. Having over 30 years of clinical experience offers strategies and tools to share.

I received my bachelor’s degree with honors from Brown University and my master’s degree from Boston College. I acquired my clinical training at McLean Hospital, Harvard Medical School’s largest psychiatric affiliate, on an inpatient unit in the division of Anxiety & Mood Disorders. I also trained at the OCD Institute, the nation’s first and foremost treatment center for obsessive-compulsive disorder. I specialize in treating OCD, anxiety, and self-doubt. I have a particular focus on “Pure O,” which are obsessions without visible compulsions. Often these include obsessional doubts about taboo topics such as sexuality, violence, morality, identity, and health. When my clients first come to see me, they are stuck in a swamp of anxiety and endless fears of “what if.” They are exhausted from trying to escape the discomfort of their thoughts and keep their emotions at bay. For so long, avoiding and withdrawing has seemed like the easiest path to take, but it has also meant missing out on parts of life. They wish things could be different—that they could get out of their heads, stop worrying, and be more fully connected to themselves and others—but facing fears and making changes feels so daunting. I am one of the few clinicians in the country trained by the creator of Inference-based Therapy (IBT or I-CBT), an evidence-based therapy for OCD that addresses self-doubt and learning to trust yourself instead of having to resort to researching, reassurance-seeking, ruminating, or avoiding. You can be free of the exhaustion that comes from all the obsessing and avoiding. In our work together, you will develop new ways of thinking, feeling, and being in relationships so that you are no longer at the mercy of self-doubt and intrusive thoughts. You will learn how to trust yourself and step into your strength so you can show up fully to your own life.

My name is Fernanda Alves and I am originally from Brazil, where I received my bachelor's degree in Psychology in 2006. After graduating, I immigrated to the US to pursue my master's degree in mental health, which I completed in 2012. Since then, I have worked as an outpatient therapist for two nonprofit organizations, where I obtained experience working with children, adolescents, and families. At the beginning of 2020, I opened my practice, where I have been working with children, adolescents and adults. As someone who has attended counselling myself for anxiety and ADHD, I noticed that plain “talk therapy” was not the most effective method for so many of us, so with that in mind, I developed a goal-oriented, evidence-based approach with my clients that allows them to develop tools to accept life’s challenges while moving towards their values and goal. Instead of focusing on WHY you can't accomplish something, I will help you focus on HOW by giving you productive solutions and strategies.
