Therapists for college students near Atlanta, GA
At The OCD & Anxiety Center, we are experienced in working with people of all ages whose anxiety has taken over their lives. Many of our patients have been to several treatment providers but have not achieved the desired results; some believe that their anxiety is "the worst case that anyone has seen" and are afraid that they cannot be helped; some are experiencing anxiety-related problems for the first time in their lives. Regardless of your experience, our passionate and skilled team of therapists are excited to provide you with the help that you need and deserve in order to gain mastery over your OCD, anxiety, phobias, and trauma. The idea of meeting with a therapist once every week is common, and this approach can be helpful for many. But for some individuals, symptoms are so severe that a higher "dose" of treatment is needed. We involve families, spouses, and other support people/systems. Our objective is to provide the skills that you need to face your fear and take back your life. We are skilled at providing effective evidence-based treatments. We will help you identify problematic patterns in your life and work with you to create an individualized treatment plan that will help you change these patterns by facing them head on. We treat anxiety wherever it presents itself. Bottom line: If anxiety is there, so are we!

Hi, I'm Marilyn. Reaching out for help is often intimidating, especially if you're unsure where to begin. Everyone’s process in therapy will look different, and I’m eager to work with you to discover what that will be. I believe that the therapeutic relationship is most important in this process, and I understand the need to find a good fit. Whether it’s depression, anxiety, stress related to classes, significant life transitions, relationship issues, etc., I will walk with you along your path to healing. Therapy can be a tool to increase self-compassion, understand our emotions, improve relationships, and offer healing. I work with individuals and couples. We all have narratives that guide our lives. Sometimes we get stuck in a narrative that is no longer effective, or we have a difficult time making sense of our experiences. Talking with someone from an objective point of view can help you make sense of your experiences and find meaning in them. I am also a trauma-informed clinician and trained in EMDR.

At Awakenings Counseling Center in Cartersville, we’re here to help you navigate the challenges of academic pressure, relationships, mental health struggles, and personal growth. Our therapists provide a safe, non-judgmental space to talk about whatever’s on your mind—whether it’s anxiety, depression, ADHD, or just feeling overwhelmed. We offer individual therapy and psychological assessments tailored to your needs, and we’d be honored to support you on your journey. You don’t have to figure it all out alone—we’re here for you.
College can look like you have everything figured out while quietly feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or unsure of who you actually are. Maybe you were used to being the “smart one” or the one who had it together, and now you’re realizing you feel… average. You’re studying harder but barely getting B’s or C’s or even failing, thinking about dropping a class, or questioning whether you’re even on the right path. You might be considering changing your major (again), taking a leave for your mental health, or feeling pressure to graduate on time so you don’t fall behind your friends. You might also be trying to figure out what you actually want to do with your life, feeling overwhelmed by career decisions, grad school applications, or exams like the MCAT or LSAT. Or you’re navigating friendships, your identity, dating, and independence for the first time and realizing it’s not as easy as it was told to you. I work best with college students and young adults who are thoughtful, self-aware, and tired of being stuck in their own head. You might look like you’re doing fine on the outside, but internally feel anxious, disconnected, or unsure of your direction. Therapy with me is collaborative and real. We don’t just talk about what’s going on. We slow things down, understand the patterns underneath it, and figure out how to actually move forward in a way that fits your life. I’m not a one-size-fits-all or “just use these coping skills” therapist. Some sessions we process, some we build tools, and some we focus on getting you unstuck and taking action. The goal is not just awareness, but change that feels realistic and sustainable. If you’re tired of overthinking everything, second-guessing yourself, or feeling like you’re falling behind while everyone else seems fine, therapy can be a space to figure things out without having to pretend you have it all together. Many college students I work with are trying therapy for the first time. You don’t need to have everything figured out or know exactly what your goals are yet, but it does help to have some sense that you want things to feel different and are open to looking at yourself more honestly. This work goes beyond venting or quick fixes. It’s about understanding patterns, building insight, and applying that in real life, even when that process feels uncomfortable at times.

I enjoy helping teenagers preparing for or adjusting to college. College can be a difficult transition. It brings with it a newfound independence, which can be overwhelming or intimidating. By helping students explore their identity and become more confident in themselves, I help them navigate this challenging time in order to experience all the excitement and rewards that college can bring. Additionally, if you struggle with perfectionism and self-criticism, I’m the kind of therapist who can help you learn to love and accept yourself, as you are, and be okay with asking for help when you need it!

Sometimes we feel stuck. Sometimes we feel overwhelmed. Sometimes we feel bad and we don't know why. My goal is to help you trailblaze through the forest of life with an improved sense of self and sense of direction. To facilitate this process I use a variety of self-assessment tools and provide self-care education. Sessions will involve talk-therapy and may include use of worksheets, journaling, charting, and art-based interventions. I also incorporate the healing power of humor, when appropriate. I will partner with you to help you feel comfortable in your own skin and confident in each step you take towards growth.
I believe counseling is about gaining a complete understanding of oneself to connect the dots of why we think, behave, and feel the way we do. Therapy can help one to see the connection and learn skills to change patterns of self-destructive behavior into life fulfilling achievements. Therapy is a safe space to explore the person you are and look at the negative experiences in your life to start the healing process. In therapy we can work together to understand yourself more fully and work towards the goals you determine. Life is not easy and seeking helping can be the first step to making lasting change towards the future you envision. I desire to help you gain the insight into you so that your future is brighter, and you are stronger in knowing who you are. Yes, we all think we have flaws but sometimes what we think are flaws are strengths hidden by biases and once we understand them a whole new perspective is unveiled. The first step is the hardest but after that I will be there for you each step of the process.
On top of going to college, are you struggling with lack of sleep or health concerns that are depleting your resources and energy, and impacting your mood? Are you worried about COVID-19 and it’s effect on you, college and your future? I am a health focused therapist and provide effective, practical interventions and existential explorations. In addition to working with students who are dealing with anxiety or depression, I also specialize in working with individuals with chronic health or medical conditions, including those who are managing a mild traumatic brain injury. I provide CBT-I for people who have insomnia and want better sleep. Due to COVID 19 I am now treating students via video conferencing on a private, confidential site.

Dr. Kay thrives with "young folk" who are seeking to be heard, understood and healed within this unique space.
