The pandemic pushed many of us to take a step back from our lives and reflect. Once I realized I would be teaching and providing counseling online from home, it was important to me to create a physical space that provided the comfort I needed to be a support to my students and clients. As a nature lover, I set up my new home office with my desk facing my back yard. I began to notice all of the birds that frequented my yard and put up bird feeders to lure my backyard friends closer to my view. I quickly began to realize how much I enjoy watching the birds; not only are they beautiful, they each seem to have their own unique personality and behavior. Each day, I spend time watching the "regulars" - the house finches, goldfinches, and cardinals - happily chirp as they feast on the seed in the feeders. I delight in periodic visits from mourning doves, downy woodpeckers, mockingbirds, and wrens. These backyard birds have given me the opportunity to slow down and appreciate the here-and-now, noticing with intent sights, sounds, and feelings. The introspection I have done has led me to discover my desire to broaden the ways in which I support the wellness of others; Songbird Wellness was born out of this aspiration. My mission through Songbird Wellness is to improve the wellness of others via psychotherapy, group support and counseling, and education. Hi! I'm from Pittsburgh and proud to be practicing in my home town. Therapy ranges from directive to less structured approaches. Directive approaches involve identifying a specific problem and starting interventions including skill building for the client. Less directive therapy involves self exploration and understanding our symptoms in an interpersonal context. These two approaches can be combined, tailored to the client. The client's responsibility is committing to therapy, and showing up weekly at the designated time, and engaging in the process. While the therapist is an expert in psychology, the client is an expect in themselves and is ultimately the source of change and improvement. I see myself as a guide, helping the client see things they may have missed or avoided, and making connections that wouldn't otherwise be obvious. The transition from high school to whatever lies beyond it for you can be challenging. Suddenly, the whole world is in front of you and there is no set "map" for what is next. You can choose college, or a career. You can stay in your home town or move far away. You have increased opportunities to explore your own identity, make choices about romantic partnerships, and consider whether you'd like to start your own family some day. Your friends' lives are changing too; some will remain in your life and you'll grow apart from others. Your relationship with your family is also changing-- both in ways that feel helpful and ways that feel hard or sad. There are so many new decisions to make, people to meet, places to explore. For some young adults, these changes feel exciting. Others feel overwhelmed and even paralyzed, frozen, by all of these changes at once. Often, there are a mix of emotions present. As we adjust to the demands of a new job or a difficult college class, or living away from our families for the first time, we may notice increased stress or big emotions that feel difficult to manage. Times of transition can also stir up past wounds such as memories of difficult or traumatic events or tense relationships with loved ones. We may find ourselves experiencing increased symptoms of worry, intense sadness, decreased motivation, conflict with other people, or intrusive thoughts and memories that affect our ability to sleep or concentrate. Some of us may try to cope by using alcohol or other substances, and we may start to wonder if this is really as helpful as we once thought it was. Young adulthood can be so many things, both wonderful and challenging. Sometimes, therapy can be a helpful way to sort it all out or heal from difficult events that continue to make daily life difficult. I enjoy working with young adults as they navigate this unique season of life, and would be honored to walk alongside you in this work. I believe you are incredibly resilient, meaning you are capable of getting through hard things. Hello! This is Dr. Lavanya Devdas, woman of color, immigrant, and a licensed psychologist in PA. I am also certified by the mindfulness meditation teacher training program under Dr. Jack Kornfield and Dr. Tara Brach. I recently completed a two year training program, The Three Doors, a Tibetan based meditation program from which I incorporate somatic based and meditation techniques.
