My style is warm, direct and collaborative. I aim to identify patterns of thinking, feeling, and relating that limit one’s ability to pursue their goals. These patterns are often the legacy of successful coping at an earlier stage of life, but no longer serve one’s best interest. Exploring the underlying forces can open space to make new choices, grow, and alleviate suffering.

Hello and welcome to Family Heart Counseling. I offer a wide variety of approaches to help you address stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, relational dynamics between you, your family, or your partner(s). I hold certifications in working with autism, emotion focused individual therapy, and in sex-informed couples therapy. I also hold a basic certification in EMDR and an advanced certification in hypnotherapy to help you process trauma. I am self-studied in Internal Family Systems, having participated in their six month circle program, and in Gottman method of couple counseling. In addition, I bring a philosophical and spiritual perspective to my practice, drawing on existentialism, the work of Carl Jung, Arnold Mindell, Trish Blain's Four Forces, and the wisdoms found in the animate world of nature. Finally, social justice informs my work as it relates to gender identity and exploration, having supported the transgender/queer community for the past five years. While I may be well-studied, my main focus is holding a safe enough space for you and what you need in order to more deeply explore yourself as a human in this world. I will accompany you on that journey.

I’m passionate about and dedicated to helping people achieve meaningful and sustainable changes that align with their core values and aspirations. I deeply enjoy working with adolescents, college students, and young adults. I have a lot of experience supporting the LGBTQIA+ and neurodiverse communities. I believe therapy is most successful when we find the path that truly supports the growth you’re seeking. In our work together, we will find an approach that fits your unique needs, drawing from my experience with a range of therapeutic orientations, including trauma-informed therapy, CBT, Mindfulness, and relational approaches. When I’m not working, I enjoy skiing, traveling, hiking, and exploring the outdoors. I also love curling up with a good book, watching a great movie or TV show, and most of all, I cherish spending time with friends and loved ones. Carmen specializes in working with adolescents and adults, families and couples. She’s been working with people experiencing trauma, anxiety, depression, and many other disorders for over 9 years. Carmen is a firm believer that people are not broken and in need of fixing, but rather wounded in need of healing. If you're ready to explore some of the unknowns inside yourself please reach out. She is honored to walk with you, without judgement, but with guidance and care. Carmen uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Internal Family systems (IFS), and Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), as well as EMDR and Lifespan Integration (LI).

The clients I work best with are ready to take an attitude of curiosity and reflection towards the patterns and beliefs that no longer serve them. You may be experiencing depression, anxiety, adjustment difficulties, or relationship stress and are hoping to relate to emotions in a healthier way or gain new self-perspective. Whether it is your first time in therapy or are returning to address matters from a new light, I believe in the innate wisdom of each person and approach our work humbly.

My clients struggle like you do. Despite being intelligent, kind, and creative, life is hard. When we first begin therapy, my clients feel like their relationships are lacking. They’re having issues with family, friends, and partners. They wonder why they keep having the same experiences in relationships, and what they can do about it. They wish they knew why things keep playing out in the same way. They feel like they’re not good enough, and that it’s their fault. All too often, they blame themselves for the struggles that they’re experiencing. Their self-criticism and relationship challenges get in the way of the life they want in so many ways. They feel like they’re failing at being an adult, and their confidence at work or school is suffering. Before they came to see me, my clients weren’t sure if they were ready for therapy. They worried that they might not feel safe opening up. They were pretty certain that they couldn’t be helped, but keeping it all inside was feeling like too much to bear. Like my clients, you deserve to feel good about yourself and your relationships.

Therapy can help us discover new parts of ourselves, challenge barriers to growth, and develop new skills to create our own paths. We as individuals hold these strengths within us already, but at times life can lead us to believe we are lacking. My hope is to help you discover these strengths! My style is direct yet gentle and I speak from an honest heart. I will often bring humor into the session, as life can funny at times or we may just need a bit of laughter to get through the challenges. I pull from various models but most often utilize Narrative Therapy, CBT, and mindfulness based techniques. Through a combination of these modalities, I work to help clients re-write unhealthy narratives and adjust patterns or ways of thinking that reinforce these inaccurate self-views. I believe in assisting clients in better understanding their own emotions and how their bodies can communicate these emotions. Once we are able to understand this, we can slow down and create new habits that are more effective in meeting our needs and managing symptoms.
