I consider therapy a collaborative practice in communication and connection, and work with couples and individuals. My open-minded and accepting approach to therapy helps people heal trauma, process loss, manage stress, make strong decisions and better understand relationships. I draw from many different disciplines to treat the whole person. Welcoming and practical, my approach doesn’t depend on any specific philosophy—I get to know you, your needs and your goals—then tailor the experience to fit you and your life. My life’s work has focused on progressive and holistic education and wellness. Comfortable connecting with all types of people, I've counseled and taught in settings from farms to prisons to corporate offices. I started my practice in early 2015 while also developing an Emotional Intelligence curriculum that I teach to urban, high-tech professionals, start-ups, and corporations. I have an M.A. and Ed.M in Counseling Psychology from Columbia University with a focus in Multicultural Counseling. I have been trained in anti-racism and LGBT SafeZone, yoga and meditation, and strength-based interpersonal psychotherapy with Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) components. My specialization with couples is Emotionally Focused Therapy, for which I recommend first reading Sue Johnson's Hold Me Tight. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in the state of New York and a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Georgia.

(At this time, all sessions are video connected.) I seek to share the best brain-based information with students during your college years. You are creative, resourceful and whole. One sign of being whole is asking for help, academically or therapeutically. Together, we will rediscover your success in the challenges you face today. We will heal and reframe the executive function challenges you have face. We will rewrite your future success story by changing your habits and providing new self-care behaviors. I trained as an ADHD Coach in 2005. That means I work with diverse thinkers, diverse sensory stimulated students, and with students who want to organize their time better. I recently became a therapist at age 62! (You never stop learning) so I know college challenges personally. I offer you some insurance options. I provide a few free assessments to help you better understand your brain and how you can retrain your brains for tomorrow's challenges. And since you are constantly evolving, we will address how to continue to see yourself as a creative human in a constantly changing process throughout your life. I am a LGBTQ+ affirming therapist and strive to provide a safe and compassionate environment for my clients. I am committed to helping clients connect with the best version of themselves by focusing on gaining deeper insight and acceptance in the face of adversity. I believe in taking a holistic approach when it comes to mental health. I have been trained in EMDR, which can be used to target a wide range of issues. I believe the past is present, which is why I focus on addressing the root issue since unhealthy behaviors/beliefs are often developed as a method of coping with something too painful or overwhelming. Additionally I love incorporating mindfulness and somatic psychotherapy to help clients attain greater mind and body congruence. The nervous system doesn't use words, so that means you simply can't "talk" your way out of certain emotions or core beliefs. That's where both of those modalities can help bridge the gap between the thinking brain and the feeling brain. Outside of private practice, I have worked as a clinician in crisis stabilization, residential treatment for survivors of sex trafficking, and an outpatient substance abuse treatment facility. You don't need to hurt alone. We can't undo the past, but we can work towards healing so you can start being present for the people and things you love most in life.

Are you looking for a unique and personalized approach to therapy? I may be the right fit for you. While I am well versed in traditional approaches, I also specialize in animal assisted therapy, art therapy, and play therapy. These tools allow me to tailor my therapeutic approach to the individual and take an integrative approach to counseling. Everyone is different, and it is important that we find an approach that works best for you! Sharing your deepest and most personal hardships with someone is a huge investment of trust. I strive to create a safe, welcoming environment that allows my clients to work through their challenges. It may not always seem possible, but you can become a healthier, happier version of yourself. It is a beautiful thing to experience and a joy to watch it happen. In some ways starting therapy can feel like jumping into a pool. The fear and uncertainty can make it hard to take that first step. The fact is if you are reading this then you are ready for a change. Call and schedule your first appointment today. I promise the water is warm.

My passion centers around guiding clients throughout the journey of life while assisting them in the cultivation of their dreams, ambitions, and goals. My approach to treatment begins through a compassionate lens of “person-in-environment”, the idea that an individual, couple, or family cannot be understood fully without respect for the various aspects of their social, familial, temporal, spiritual, economic, and physical environments. I enjoy working with a variety of populations: late-adolescents, young adults & adults, LGBTQ+, and executive professionals dealing with anxiety, depression, anger, grief & loss, trauma, and life-transitional issues. I also embrace working with men’s issues, high-achievers/perfectionists, and healthcare providers. As an African-American therapist I hold a strong commitment to enhancing the quality of life and empowering people of African ancestry through advocacy, human services delivery, and research. In both my personal and professional life, I am cultivating a mindfulness practice. Practicing mindfulness has allowed me to intimately connect with the present moment thereby enhancing my relationship between mind-body, with loved ones, and with nature. I find incorporating mindfulness-based cognitive behavioral interventions including Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness Based CBT (M-CBT), and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) to enhance the therapeutic process by cultivating non-judgemental awareness, compassion, and purpose. I apply these principles to the therapeutic relationship by cultivating a warm, non-judgmental environment, allowing clients to feel safe in connecting with the most intimate parts of themselves so that they may begin the healing process. My therapeutic philosophy incorporates trauma-informed approaches to therapy. Often times out of necessity, survivors of trauma need to disconnect from themselves (mind & body) to survive the most difficult and horrific experiences of their lives. Using this lens, my hope is to assist clients in healing the fractures of trauma by re-establishing the connection between their minds and bodies. In my personal life I am a husband, brother, and devoted dog-parent to my, pitbull-boxer mix, Maple. Georgia has been my home for over 16 years now but I still consider myself a native Chicagoan. During my spare time, hobbies I enjoy include: coaching & playing lacrosse, video games, weightlifting, and caring for my Bonsai tree collection. I offer a limited amount of reduced fee appointments to clients who cannot comfortably afford to pay the full fee for services. Isom E. White, LCSW is seeing clients in our Smyrna / Vinings location.
