Acceptance and change are hard. I help people face and make space for their life histories and experiences and support them in identifying and making the changes that lead to meaning and satisfaction in their lives and relationships. I believe that you are the expert on your life, and my role is to provide encouragement, support and guidance on your journey of healing and growth. My practice is focused on the needs of men, and I enjoy helping men that are struggling with anxiety, depression, chronic illness or disability, relationship issues, complex trauma/childhood wounds, racial stress and trauma, and navigating adulthood/"failure to launch" and masculinity. As a Black man, I am committed to addressing the unique experiences of and challenges that face BIPOC men. I believe that humans are wired for connection and that profound and lasting healing comes from satisfying this essential need. My work is based on AEDP Psychotherapy (formally known as Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy) and Emotionally Focused Therapy. The AEDP Institute (aedpinstitute.org) describes AEDP Psychotherapy as “an experiential model that seeks to alleviate patients’ psychological suffering by helping them process the overwhelming emotions associated with trauma in a way that facilitates corrective emotional and relational experiences that mobilize positive changes in our neuroplastic brains.” The International Centre for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy (iceeft.com/) describes Emotionally Focused Therapy as a “form of therapy that helps people understand and improve their emotional connection with themselves and others.” Both therapies emphasize the importance of our relationships with ourselves and others and use the power of corrective experiences with our emotions within the safe haven and secure base of the therapist-client relationship to fuel growth and healing. I also use skills and techniques from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and other approaches that emphasize mindfulness, acceptance, and compassion when needed to facilitate healing. I come from a family of helpers and healers, and I have been privileged to help people in a variety of roles and settings. I have worked as a state social welfare caseworker, an assistant in a state library for the blind and disabled, a respiratory therapist and a medical social worker. I grew up in a military family and was fortunate to be exposed to and learn from a variety of cultures. I am a member of the "sandwich generation” and know what it means to care for and support older and younger family members with chronic illness and disability simultaneously. As a person living with chronic illness, I also have lived experience with the challenges and limitations that come along with living with a disability. My experiences have fostered in me a deep appreciation of and respect for the diversity of the human experience. When I am not working, I enjoy all things that involve good food, friends, and family. I look forward to learning more about you, who and what matters to you, and traveling with you on your journey of hope and healing!
My approach is collaborative, practical, and grounded in evidence-based treatment. I primarily draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and integrate Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)-informed techniques. I believe therapy should be an active, empowering process that helps you develop insight and tools that actually work in your daily life. My style is warm, straightforward, and curious. I want you to feel both supported and understood as we work together toward your goals. My Experience I’m a licensed psychologist who provides therapy (ages 12+) and psychological assessment for adolescents and adults. I work with individuals navigating anxiety, mood disorders, OCD, identity and relationship concerns, and life transitions. I also have experience supporting clients in recovery from substance use and those within the LGBTQ+ community. Whether through therapy or testing, I strive to help clients gain clarity, confidence, and direction. My Education I earned my Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) degree from Marshall University. I completed my predoctoral internship at Valley Health in Huntington, West Virginia, and my postdoctoral training at Marshall Psychiatry/Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. What to Expect from Me I bring a warm, authentic, and collaborative style to therapy. You can expect a space that balances compassion with curiosity—where you’ll feel heard and supported, but also challenged in ways that promote growth and insight. Together, we’ll identify what’s getting in the way of your goals and develop strategies that fit your life and values. I offer both in-person and telehealth sessions to make therapy accessible and flexible for your needs. Whether you’re seeking therapy, assessment, or consultation, I look forward to partnering with you on your path toward greater understanding and well-being.

Navigating the transition to college and early adulthood can be exciting, but it can also be incredibly stressful and overwhelming. Are you struggling to manage the pressures of academics, relationships, or being away from home? Do you find yourself constantly worrying, feeling down, or having difficulty sleeping? Are you experiencing conflict with parents, peers, or even professors? Are you questioning whether college is the right path for you, or if you're pursuing it due to external pressure? Everyone experiences some level of stress during this time, but if these feelings are persistent and impacting your daily life, or causing significant relationship strain, it might be helpful to talk to someone. Counseling provides a safe space to explore these challenges, develop coping strategies, and clarify your own goals and values. Our virtual sessions offer the flexibility to meet before, between, or after classes, making it easier than ever to prioritize your mental well-being as you navigate this new chapter. You may be feeling overwhelmed, emotionally exhausted, or stuck. Sometimes life changes suddenly through trauma, illness, grief, or experiences you never expected to face. Other times, the stress builds slowly over months or years until you realize you are no longer feeling like yourself. Therapy offers a space where you can slow down, process what you’re carrying, and reconnect with yourself without pressure or judgment. Contact me today to get started!
Hi, I'm Aliyah! I work with clients who are depressed or anxious, having issues with family, or simply just need a space to vent and figure out things as we go. Many of my clients have ADHD, Autism, OCD, Anxiety, or Depression. I am direct and solution-focused, so we'll get to the root of your unhelpful habits/patterns and figure out a game plan on how to move forward. I also do offer a sliding scale (therapy for cheaper rates) as college is already expensive enough! If you're ready to stop feeling like you're just getting through your day, reach out today. Do you have a loud inner critic? Are you feeling worn out by trying to manage it all? Are the ways that you're coping not working as well as they used to work? Maybe you’re exhausted by the fear that your best will never be enough. Maybe you doubt that what you’re doing is good enough, even when other people praise your efforts. You have high standards that continue to rise with each success and accomplishment. You have a hard time relaxing and feel guilty when you do. Along the way, trying to be the best student/friend/child/employee/etc has become overwhelming. Meeting the weight of those expectations has become unmanageable. If you're feeling this way, therapy can help. Together, we can help you access your own inner calm and confidence. We can relieve inner critical parts of the burdens that are contributing to your exhaustion, anxiety and stress.
I believe every one of us is a good person at heart, we are all trying our best and laziness is a myth. You may have a hard time believing that about yourself. You may have been taught (by families or systems) that you are bad, lazy or selfish. You are scared to make decisions or trust your intuition. You want to love yourself the way you love others! I offer a radically different perspective. I think it is possible to love yourself a little bit at a time, take things less personally and create more space in your life for peace.
Welcome! I provide evidence-based therapy to address a broad range of presenting issues. Currently, my practice focuses on anxiety, depression, substance use, relationships, school stress, trauma, disordered eating, and other health concerns (e.g., sleep problems, adjusting to medical diagnoses, etc.). My primary task as your psychologist is to foster a supportive, collaborative environment where we are able to identify and work towards meaningful goals. In order to accomplish that, I utilize an array of strategies and therapeutic methods that are tailored to your particular presenting concerns. Together, we will collaborate to identify what is causing or perpetuating your distress and come up with strategies to improve your quality of life and help you thrive. Deciding to try therapy is a leap of faith, both in your therapist and also in yourself and your ability to improve your life. Thank you for letting me join you on this journey!
The typical challenges people face are embedded in fear of rejection, loneliness and disconnection - not feeling likable and lovable. Meaningful living can be achieved by acknowledging this fear and acting intentionally to create love, authenticity, and congruence. I believe effective counseling is grounded in a trusting and affirming working alliance. I work from an interpersonal perspective, meaning our professional relationship is the key to a positive and productive experience. Grounding my training in Existential-Humanistic theory, I seek to support your effort to find personal meaning and self-understanding, to explore your lived experience and discover the most genuine you. I offer support to achieve insight and the tools to cultivate purposeful transformation, enabling you to live a meaningful life in the face of uncertainty and potential suffering. We all take turns with suffering; we all take turns with joy. You can feel accomplished and connected; I can help.
Life is happening to us all, and learning how to adjust to our everyday life is work we all have to do. Let me be your guide! Our time together is spent engaging in conversation with you, educating you on tools and techniques to help you achieve your personal goals, and empowering you to do the necessary work for your growth. I prioritize the unique experience and perspectives of each client. By creating a safe and supportive environment, we take a solution-focused approach which can be effective for many individuals, as it emphasizes finding a practical solution and setting achievable goals rather than solely delving into past issues. Life can present challenges that feel overwhelming, and it's completely normal to seek support during difficult times. I understand that taking the first step toward therapy can be daunting, but please know that you are not alone. I look forward to being your guide, helping you navigate your journey toward healing and growth.
I work primarily with men seeking to better understand themselves as they navigate life and relationships. We can talk about personal, relational, sexual, or spiritual concerns as needed. Mostly this is space for you to learn through our shared dialogue how to connect with your inner world and live with greater freedom, power, and love throughout your life.
Are you looking for extra support through a challenging situation you're currently facing? Are you overwhelmed by daily life? Have you been feeling like you're all alone in your struggles? We strive to be an oasis for you in the difficult moments you are facing. We are not here to preach to you or tell you what to think or feel, but to work with you as you seek out personal answers, increase your coping skills, and make choices that are healthy for you. We provide an empathetic and non-judgmental environment and offer practical feedback, tools, and resources to help you make positive changes in yourself and your life. We can work together during your counseling sessions to better understand, move past, and navigate current concerns and/or heal from past traumas so that you can have a fulfilling and meaningful life. We offer free 15-minute phone consultations with one of our counselors so you can determine if counseling at OCC is right for you.
