Do you feel stuck? Worried? Helpless? Worthless? Or that you are not living up to your potential? These symptoms are all too common, and yet when we feel them, we tend to feel utterly alone. I am here to offer a relaxed approach to therapy where you can feel comfortable and safe to work on what’s bothering you. My goal is to give you the help you desire, and that will always come first. I look forward to hearing from you.

I'm Julie TenBrook, PHMNP. I'm the owner of Open Minds. Open Minds symbolizes acceptance, on my part, of who you are without judgement. It, also, symbolizes the opening of your mind to change and healing. Being in college is a time of rapid growth. This can be hard. Figuring out how to navigate school, new relationships, new routines and define who you are as a young adult can be stressful. If you are feeling stressed, overwhelmed, and anxious, I can help. Treatment is tailored to what you need. It is usually multi-modal and not "just" medications or "just" therapy. Everyone's needs are different and we can design a treatment plan that fits you.
I provide full psychological evaluations (including ADHD and autism) for people 18+, considering the full range of DSM-5-TR conditions. I specialize in ADHD, autism, and complex trauma, and my focus is on accurate diagnosis and treatment planning for individuals with multiple or overlapping conditions. Life is full of unexpected twists and turns that can throw us off course. That’s why it is important to carve out the time to talk through what’s going on and to thoughtfully plan next steps. I specialize in supporting those who have been diagnosed with an eating disorder, experience disordered eating, or struggle with body image issues. I have extensive experience working with those who struggle with anxiety, depression, grief, low self-esteem, and stress. I wholeheartedly believe everyone deserves respectful and supportive care, no matter your body, shape, size, race, religion, gender or diagnosis. I am a Licensed Master Social Worker specializing in depression, anxiety, trauma, autism, life adjustments, and self-esteem for children, adolescents, and adults. In our work together, I'll help you navigate negative thought patterns and challenging life experiences. Demonstrating empathy and compassion is what led me into this field, and it's what helps me be the therapist my patients feel comfortable and secure working with throughout their healing journey. With every patient, I aim to provide a warm, safe, and therapeutic space for healing while prioritizing their comfort and needs, and I value receiving feedback and collaboration along the way. Seeking help isn’t always easy, but I believe it's never too late to start your journey of healing, growing, and changing. Together, we'll build a warm, comforting, and safe environment where that healing can happen. Within that space, I use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to help you accept difficult feelings and thoughts, transform negative thought patterns, learn new coping skills, and create changes to behavior patterns that lead to healthier and happier experiences. Mental health is something I'm passionate about, which is why I always ensure an empathetic, holistic, accepting, and supportive approach tailored to your unique needs, challenges, experiences, and goals. My path to becoming a therapist began with my career as a Registered Behavior Technician, where I gained four years of experience working with autistic children and adolescents, teaching communication, social skills, emotional regulation, problem-solving, and strategies for reducing challenging behaviors. This experience deepened my commitment to providing mental health services to a variety of different populations with many different problems. My clinical experience has also included work with patients at inpatient mental health facilities, children's advocacy centers, and hospice settings, supporting patients and their family members. These experiences have given me a well-rounded foundation in the counseling field, along with the skills to work with a broad range of patients and mental health struggles. During my free time, I enjoy exercising, hiking, exploring nature, and discovering new cities and adventures. On quieter days at home, I like watching my favorite shows, reading books, and cooking and baking.

I emphasize a person-centered and trauma-informed approach, integrating holistic internal medicine, patient education, medication management, and preventative care to support and sustain overall health and well-being. Specializing in psychopharmacology and psychodynamic therapy, I also have experience with advanced treatment modalities, including pharmacogenetic testing and psychiatric evaluations. WELCOME! I'm so glad you're here. Many of the people I work with are adults who’ve carried more than their fair share — the ones who look capable on the outside but feel anxious or disconnected on the inside. They've usually spent years masking ADHD/AuDHD, are deeply sensitive, and/or are trying to heal from complex trauma (CPTSD). If this sounds like you, I want you to know you're not alone, and you don’t have to keep trying to “figure it out” by yourself. I won’t hand you a checklist or tell you to breathe it away - I promise! Therapy with me is about noticing what’s alive for you and finding ways to move through patterns that have kept you stuck. With over 25 years of experience, and decades dedicated to my own recovery, I offer both professional expertise and a deeply lived understanding to our sessions. I’m quirky, a little unconventional, and definitely human. In our work together, we'll go beyond simply talking about your life. I'll help you to shift out of over-thinking and connect with the wisdom of your heart and body. That’s where your strength and self-trust already live, and where the parts of you that know how to heal can be heard. My therapy dog, Leasel, often joins us, offering her calm presence when words aren’t enough. I draw from approaches like EMDR, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Somatic Therapy, integrated with Conscious Living principles. This work helps us uncover patterns that have been shaping your experiences and guides you toward change that's meaningful and actually lasts. Why I May Be A Good Fit For You I believe complex trauma shapes how we connect and move through the world—but those patterns can soften when we’re met with compassion and someone who’s been there. I grew up in a family that looked good on the outside but was marked by addiction and narcissism and it taught me how essential it is to be seen for who we truly are. I'm passionate about helping sensitive people know that hope is real, no matter what. I believe healing happens when we can be honest with ourselves and experience real connection. I show up as a real person—warm and down-to-earth. I also believe animals and nature offer healing when words fall short. I care deeply about neurodivergent folks, LGBTQIA+ inclusion, and creating space for anyone who’s ever felt like they're on the outside looking in. I look forward to connecting with you!
School is more than an academic challenge. It's often a time when long-standing patterns in relationships, identity, and self-expectations become impossible to ignore. You may find yourself constantly meeting others' expectations, questioning your own decisions, struggling to set boundaries, or feeling responsible for keeping the peace in your relationships while losing sight of what you need. My practice is dedicated to helping students understand how these patterns developed and why they may no longer serve them. Together, we'll explore the ways you've learned to relate to yourself and others, strengthen your sense of self, and help you develop the confidence to make choices that reflect your values rather than guilt, fear, or the expectations of others. You don't have to choose between caring about the people in your life and caring for yourself. My approach is evidence-based, trauma-informed, and grounded in genuine curiosity about your unique story. Whether you're navigating academic pressure, relationship challenges, family expectations, or major life transitions, therapy offers a space to better understand yourself, build self-trust, and create relationships that support both connection and authenticity.
My philosophy of counseling is based on the belief that you possess the power to change, and that my role is to help you become aware of how to understand and utilize that power. My goal is to first listen and fully understand your need(s). After that, I will work side by side with you to develop the insights, tools and skills necessary for you to achieve the goals and changes you are seeking to make. I may draw upon various approaches, including Grief Centered Therapy, Person-Centered, Solution Focused Brief Practice, Emotion Focused and CBT. My hope is that our sessions will help you to feel empowered to challenge your internal thinking process to create positive change in your life. I believe these approaches will help to bring about effective long-term results, by helping you to discover how to utilize your own inner strengths and gifts. You are invited to, at any time, ask questions about what we are doing and the reasons for the interventions. This is your process and investment. Please contact me for a free consultation.
I am an integrative, trauma-focused, queer therapist dedicated to helping people understand themselves better. I particularly enjoy working with clients who want to be in more authentic, connected relationships with partners and family members, want to better understand how trauma has impacted their life and shed patterns that are no longer useful, or want to parent differently than they were parented. My areas of specialized training include interpersonal trauma and PTSD (sexual assault, childhood abuse, domestic violence), attachment and relationships, perinatal mental health, and infant/early childhood mental health. My approach is informed by an anti-oppressive, feminist, and identity-affirming lens. I hold a perspective that our systems and culture impact our sense of self and how we show up in the world. You know yourself best, and I am here to create a nonjudgmental space for you to bring your full self to learn and grow in the ways that are most important to you. I balance processing to better understand a root cause and change patterns with learning new skills. I view therapy as a collaborative partnership, welcoming feedback and showing up with warmth and authenticity, integrating humor and gentle challenging where appropriate. Reach out for a free consultation to see if working together feels like the right fit!
